Whittaker S12E06 The Diary of a Young Girl

Whittaker and her companions arrive in 1940s Amsterdam in order to visit
Anne Frank and see how she's getting on with her diary.

As they step out of the TARDIS and into the streets and lanes by the
canals the skin colour of Whittaker's companions Ryan and Yasmin looks
clearly out of place. Graham points out to Whittaker that it cannot be
too long before people start getting suspicious and they try to bunch up
around Ryan and Yasmin to try to conceal them.

The travelers make their way to the Opekta offices on the Prinsengracht
(Prince's Canal). Whittaker greets various former employees of Anne
Frank's father Otto Frank along the way, making a series of secret
gestures and glancing at the non-white members of their party.

At the entrance to the building a woman named Miep Gies greets them and
takes them into the building and upstairs to a landing on which a
bookcase is standing. Gies draws away the bookcase to reveal a secret
annex and they all walk through. Gies tells them to speed up and quickly
draws back the book case.

Inside is Gies' husband Jan along with Anne and her father Otto Frank.
The Franks are delighted to receive new visitors and esquire about any
news. Ryan and Yasmin have brought Anne and the other children who are
in hiding some marbles to play with. Whittaker talks about the progress
of the D-Day landings.

The days pass by and while Whittaker and Graham can enter and leave the
building freely to get supplies, the others cannot. During the night
Anne Frank reads out extracts from her diary. They fall asleep.

On the morning of 4 August 1944 the secret annex is stormed by a group
of German uniformed police who have become suspicious of activity around
the Opekta building. Everyone inside is arrested and taken away.

The Franks along with Ryan, and Yasmin are taken to the Reich Main
Security Office where they are interrogated and held overnight.

Whittaker and Graham who were on an early morning market trip manage to
escape capture.

Miep Gies is questioned and threatened by the Security Police but not
detained. She returns to the secret annex the following day to find Anne
Frank's papers strewn on the floor and Whittaker and Graham waiting for
her. The TARDIS has gone missing!

The Nazis demand Ryan, and Yasmin provide their identity papers. They
cannot, and are unable to prove their identities which are not on
record. They are therefore assumed to be British spies and along with
the Franks are sent to Auschwitz for extermination!

They are all taken to the railway station and loaded aboard animal cars
to be deported. During the journey they consider jumping off the train
but others who have forced open the windows and jumped are seen to have
been crushed or dragged and torn to pieces along the tracks.

At the concentration camp the women are separated from the men and all
are shaven and disinfected. Those who can work are put to work. Those
who cannot are gassed.

Whittaker and Graham desperately try to find the TARDIS which is being
held by the Nazis. They acquire fake ids and work as florists on the
banks of the canals while they search.

Ryan attempts to escape Auschwitz by knocking out a Nazi guard and
taking his uniform and weapon. He seizes the Nazi's vehicle and attempts
to drive it at speed at the barriers shouting get out of the way in
German. Bollards come up in the middle of the road and he is forced to
stop. He continues to shout at the soldiers saying he is an important
person and has urgent business when they demand his pass. They almost
let him though without inspecting it but one solider notices his skin
colour. There is an exchange of fire. Ryan is dead.

On 28 October Anne Frank is relocated to Bergen-Belsen where she would
die along with her sister. Her mother Edith Frank is left behind at
Auschwitz where she dies.

Yasmin is taken to be gassed just days before Auschwitz is liberated on
January 27, 1945. Only Otto Frank would survive.

Whittaker and Graham finally get back the TARDIS after the Netherlands
is liberated by the Canadians on May 5th 1945, but there is nothing they
can do to save their companions who are already dead.

Time can be changed by no man and no woman!

They depart, resolved to take action so such tragic events can never
happen again.

Does Graham ask "Why the @#$%^! don't you have a way to summon the TARDIS by remote control????"?

Bad writing is no excuse. Ryan and Yasmin are both already dead so there
is nothing Whittaker can do to change that.

How do they steal the correct ID documents, papers, orders, etc.? The

Why doesn't the Doctor just use her Psychic Paper to convince Nazis that she is a high ranking official? She could then ask them for help in finding TARDIS & Companions!
Do you really think the Nazi's would be so stupid as to believe a woman
would have any power over them?
Okay, have Graham use PP to pass for Nazi official!
It's still not going to work. Where is Graham going to get a Nazi
uniform from? The Nazis will want full documentation including signed
orders and warrants and will want to triple check people's identities
and papers so they know they are who they say they are.
They would use Psychic Paper to convince officials that they have all necessary documents, papers, orders, etc. Also, I am sure they can steal uniforms.
How do they steal the correct ID documents, papers, orders, etc.? The

Those were citizen IDs not Nazi officer IDs. If you're not on the access

... and Dr Who is fact based?!
It has to be believable. That's what the imbeciles Moffat and
Chibnall have totally forgotten.
The first principle of the show is that someone can travel in Time
and Space.
"believable"!! ... Sure it is!!
If you can't make it believable then the show is dead an buried.
That's the difference between good and bad writing.
"make it believable"!! Do you really believe that any real humanoid
can travel in Time and Space, Agamemnon??
If you can't make it believable then you're not a good writer.
The traveling forward in time thing is already simple enough.
Post by Daniel60
Sure it can be entertaining, more so or less so, but believable?? I
think not. IMHO, of course.
Then you're a very bad writer. A good writer can always make it believable.
As the idiot might type "alt.uk.kook is just around the corner.".

How do they steal the correct ID documents, papers, orders, etc.? The
Nazis will want to inspect every one of them page by page.
With help from Dutch Resistance.
But I was imagining the Psychic Paper LOOKING to the Nazis like
the proper documents!
The Nazis are not that stupid. Things have to be cross checked and
filed in ledgers.

You do have the Doctor & Graham obtaining fake IDs. How had they done so?
Those were citizen IDs not Nazi officer IDs. If you're not on the
access list then you're not getting into any Nazi building.
Rubbish, Agamemnon!! ;-P I've seen "Hogan's Heros" characters enter

Anne Frank et al went into hiding in 1942. Why didn't Doctor visit in 1942 or 1943?

Anne's last entry on Aug 1, 1944. That should have told the Doctor to leave no later than Aug 1 (since you say that the Doctor read that diary).

Why doesn't the Doctor just use her Psychic Paper to convince
Nazis that she is a high ranking official? She could then ask them for
help in finding TARDIS & Companions!

Okay, have Graham use PP to pass for Nazi official!
It's still not going to work. Where is Graham going to get a Nazi
uniform from? The Nazis will want full documentation including signed
orders and warrants and will want to triple check people's identities
and papers so they know they are who they say they are.
They would use Psychic Paper to convince officials that they have all

steal uniforms.

They don't identify them as Nazis. They don't convey any fake orders or
search warrants. They don't require them to be know to existing Nazis
that can verify their identity.

Ryan attempts to escape Auschwitz by knocking out a Nazi guard and

to drive it at speed at the barriers shouting get out of the way in
German. Bollards come up in the middle of the road and he is forced to

let him though without inspecting it but one solider notices his skin

On 28 October Anne Frank is relocated to Bergen-Belsen where she would

Yasmin is taken to be gassed just days before Auschwitz is liberated on

Whittaker and Graham finally get back the TARDIS after the Netherlands
is liberated by the Canadians on May 5th 1945, but there is nothing they
can do to save their companions who are already dead.
Time can be changed by no man and no woman!
They depart, resolved to take action so such tragic events can never
happen again.
So they have resolved to prevent such events as massacres in India, Rwanda, Bosnia, etc? But how can they do so without wrecking Earth's history and evoking Time Bats?

Time can be changed by no man and no woman!
They depart, resolved to take action so such tragic events can never
happen again.
So they have resolved to prevent such events as massacres in India,
Rwanda, Bosnia, etc? But how can they do so without wrecking Earth's
history and evoking Time Bats?

Whittaker S12E06 The Diary of a Young Girl

Whittaker S12E06 The Diary of a Young Girl

Wouldn't the above imply that it was POSSIBLE for a black & an Indian to obtain valid ID papers? (Why bother asking if said black & Indian are sure to not have any?).

If Ryan and Yasmin had had valid identity papers, are you saying that they would have been toast anyway?

If they were in Europe legally before the war began they would have had
valid ID papers and their identities would have been on record.

Not only did they not have ID papers but they had no identities on
record, so they didn't officially exist.

Their extermination was extirpated more thoroughly due to the fact they
were also regarded as spies.

New plan: Infiltrate Nazi building as custodians with help of Dutch Resistance, who will have narrowed down location of Blue Box, and obtained custodian IDs matching those of real custodians who work there. Jodie Washerwoman!

Or JodieDoc could seduce Nazi into giving her access, and/or steal his clothes & papers.

The Doctor never went back in time to save Adric after he died in Earthshock.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adric:

"In Time-Flight, Tegan tries to persuade the Doctor to go back in time and save him, but the Doctor refuses to break the Laws of Time, even though it obviously pains him.".

Death of Adric is an example of a death the Doctor could not undo. Similar to cases of Yasmin and Ryan!

The Franks along with Ryan, and Yasmin are taken to the Reich Main

to drive it at speed at the barriers shouting get out of the way in

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day, but a survey released today found that many adults lack basic knowledge of what happened — and this lack of knowledge is more pronounced among millennials, whom the survey defined as people ages 18 to 34.

Thirty-one percent of Americans, and 41 percent of millennials, believe that two million or fewer Jews were killed in the Holocaust; the actual number is around six million. Forty-one percent of Americans, and 66 percent of millennials, cannot say what Auschwitz was. And 52 percent of Americans wrongly think Hitler came to power through force. The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany commissioned the study.

What will Doctor do about this problem?

On the morning of 4 August 1944 the secret annex is stormed by a group
of German uniformed police who have become suspicious of activity around
the Opekta building. Everyone inside is arrested and taken away.

By immediately getting back inside it the moment they knew they were on
the edge of a black hole. I mean after all if the TARDIS is capable of
dragging the Earth through the space time vortex then it's should be
capable of dragging the ship away from the black hole batter than its
own engines.

She'd look for a seat. Maybe find a cup of coffee. And nibble on a sandwich.

On the morning of 4 August 1944 the secret annex is stormed by a group
of German uniformed police who have become suspicious of activity around
the Opekta building. Everyone inside is arrested and taken away.
Why hadn't Ryan and Yasmin ALREADY LEFT the scene???????
How? There's no other exit.
Simply leave on or before the evening of Aug 3!
That easy?

Anne Frank's diary doesn't mention being taken by the Nazis and being

Capaldi decides to land on a space ship on the even horizon of a black

The Doctor WOULD need to find out WHEN Anne was taken from her hiding place, so as to not risk arriving in Berlin AFTER the Nazis had taken her and thus miss the opportunity to meet her! The Doctor would therefore have learned that she had been captured 4 Aug, and would therefore have made sure to depart with her Companions by 3 Aug!
Anne Frank's diary doesn't mention being taken by the Nazis and being
gassed. Whittaker is stupid enough to go and visit her, especially after
Capaldi decides to land on a space ship on the even horizon of a black
hole.
However, the diary would cut off no later than the morning of 4 Aug, which should tell the Doctor to not stay past 3 Aug.
She didn't remember the date it ended. It was ages since she read it. Do
you remember the year the Federation of Planets was founded?

On the morning of 4 August 1944 the secret annex is stormed by a
group
of German uniformed police who have become suspicious of activity
around
the Opekta building. Everyone inside is arrested and taken away.
When the Doctor et al 1st arrived, why hadn't she stipulated that
they needed to leave by 3 August?

Because she knows sod all about history. Hasn't that become apparent
yet
after over 50 years?
But according to your story, she DID know about Ann Frank's diary, and
knew where she was hiding during summer of 1944. I had assumed that
since she knew that much, that she would know the Franks would be
arrested on 4 August!
Oh?
The Doctor would know that Anne Frank was captured, taken to Auschwitz,
and killed, so would naturally research date of her capture.
It's the Doctor. It doesn't do things like that. Anne Frank, she was a
nice girl who wrote a diary; let's go and visit her.
Why would the Doctor even consider ANNE FRANK (as opposed to some other
girl in 1944 Berlin) worth visiting UNLESS she knew that Anne had been
taken by the Nazis to her death, leaving her diary to be found &
published?

The Doctor would want to make sure not to arrive in Amsterdam AFTER Anne Frank et al were taken. She would therefore do research (on Internet or in TARDIS database) to find out WHEN Nazis took Anne (4 Aug 1944), so she would know to not stay past 3 Aug!

So I take it that the Doctor wouldn't be able to rescue Ryan without dangerously large ripples.

Anne Frank's jokes, found on hidden pages in her diary:

Joke 1: "Do you know why the German girls of the armed forces are in the Netherlands? As a mattress for the soldiers."

Joke 2: "A man comes home at night and notices that another man shared the bed with his wife that evening. He searches the whole house, and finally also looks in the bedroom closet. There is a totally naked man, and when that one man asked what the other was doing there, the man in the closet answered: 'You can believe it or not but I am waiting for the tram.' "

I don't get this one.

Joke 3: "A man had a very ugly wife and he did not want a relationship with her. One evening, he came home and he saw his friend lying in bed with his wife and the man said: 'He does and I have to!!!!' "

Joke 4: "A man and a woman had a relationship, and after a few months the woman's belly was getting disturbingly big. Then, the man called a doctor who said: 'It's just air, Mrs., just air!!!" The man replied: 'I am not pumping air, am I?' ".

Whittaker and Graham desperately try to find the TARDIS which is being
held by the Nazis. They acquire fake ids and work as florists on the
banks of the canals while they search.
Plan: Ask Dutch Resistance to look for large blue box in Nazi buildings. If box located, then Graham & Doctor could pose as janitors (using Psychic Paper if necessary) to gain access to TARDIS.
