or You're All Invited to Dinner

or Capitalism is Bad

or Screw Donald Trump

or The Ghost of Grace O'Brien

Twenty minutes of mind numbing soap opera before we see any plot, then
more soap opera, and still more, and finally puerile soap opera brings
this episode to its conclusion.

So what was it all about? Promoting homosexuality within the first 5
minutes by making one of the female characters married to another woman,
which lost all sympathy for her altogether. Then we're tortured by
dinner with Yasmin's family. Then Yasmin's mum thinks she's having a
fling with Whittaker. Graham meets the ghost of Sharon D. Clarke, which
no kid is ever going to understand. Then Yasmin's mum thinks she's
having a fling with Ryan. Then Ryan loses his dyspraxia ones again, then
plays some grime. And finally everyone joins Whittaker back in the
TARDIS, because Yaz can't stand her family, Graham can't get over
Clarke's ghost, and Ryan doesn't want to see his father.

Oh, and there were some spiders...

Garbage, complete and utter garbage.

Instead of mind numbing puerile soap opera why couldn't Chibnall do
romance? Why? Because that would stop him from promoting his vile and
disgusting misandristic, homosexual and transgender agenda, where the
Doctor is revealed to have cross dressed as a nun, and all men must be
made to look weak, as we saw with Graham, or evil, as we see with Ryan's
father, and have to be dominated by or subservient to women, but not in
an S&M kind of way, which takes away any enjoyment that can be gained
from it, altogether.

Once again Ryan loses his dyspraxia by being able to coordinate his
timing and reflexes to capture a spider by covering it with a saucepan
while it's on the run.

The villain of the day was created in order to attack Donald Trump and
continue the promotion of Chibnall's loony left wing agenda, that all
forms of capitalism and industry must be evil and catastrophic for
society and the environment. Why not portray a good capitalist for once
instead of a ridiculous stereotype devised crazy left wingers?

On top of that, once again Yasmin fails to alert the police of a serious
incident that would result in a threat to life and well-being, the
spider infestation in the city, so that they can deal with it
professionally.

The northern accents make it impossible to tell any of the female
characters apart when they're speaking, and men, like Yasmin's dad, are
always portrayed as either stupid or weak, or both.

As usual Whittaker is totally unconvincing and has turned the Doctor
into a weakling, and everything is driven by fortunate coincidences.
Spiders just happen to infest Sheffield from the very moment the TARDIS
arrives. The first person they kill just happens to be one of Yasmin's
neighbors. Yasmin's mum just happens to have been employed by the
businessman at the center of it all, and one of the scientists who
genetically modified the spiders just happens to be visiting her friend
in Yasmin's tower-block and bumps into Whittaker. Totally ridiculous,
unworthy of even an episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures!

The male DW episodes dissed capitalists on several occasions, so Jodie is following tradition there!

They did it in a subtle manner mainly using the allegory of aliens,
which wasn't offensive to half the population of America which voted for
Donald Trump to be president.

No, they are not. She should have cleared the building and called in
back up. For a start someone pulled out a gun on her without a good
reason, which is justifiable grounds for the police to intervene and
investigate.

I saw a few human capitalists get dissed (Planet Of Giants, The Green Death, Oxygen). Do you count human capitalists who imprison/enslave/torture/collect aliens (Seeds of Doom, Planet of the Ood, Dalek, Thin Ice, Seeds Of Doom.....)

Did any of these capitalists diss the current US president? Were they
portrayed as imbecilic morons? Did they follow on from episodes which
were completely filled with biased left wing propaganda?

How about portraying capitalists as good people, like Richard Branson,
Michael Sugar, and Bill Gates?

She tells them that a man is pointing a gun at her and that criminal
damage has been committed on the premises, and a break in has occurred
in one of the bath rooms. Then she waits until the police arrive and
warns them that there are large spiders on the loose also.

If Yasmin had phoned her superiors to tell them that "Giant spiders have infested Jack Robinson's hotel!", how would they have reacted?
before all this spider talk, the other week, and the night before "critter" appeared in ER (the dylan newsgroup site) when i got in the car to join my friends for mexican food, there was this tiny little critter, like the world's tiniest spider, it had lots of legs (i'm guessing 8, sure looked like it) right on the back of the headrest for the seat in front of me, passenger side. i was really surprised, i'd never seen a bug in a car before like this, and also, well, i'm ashamed to admit it, but i smooshed it. you know, i mean, it was an insect...it was so very very tiny...well, anyway, and then i told them about it. i'd never seen anything like it (in re-cent mem'ry).

and then critter showed up either that night, or the next day, in ER, and then now all this talk of arachnids here in dr. who! a bit strange...i see this most tiny little spider critter, and then all this.

things like this happen so much, something is definitely happening here. for example, a topic comes up in therapy when i have cause to use a word (almost the only place in real life i have any occasions to engage in conversations vaguely approaching anything intelligent at times, not including my mother and brother, as opposed to mostly chit chat, but not always) words i am well aware hasn't ever been used before, either for many many years, or ever, and then later, like that night or the next day, i see the world pop up here in usenet. at first i was thinking someone was telling on me...but now i just think it's something funny in the air. the cosmic consciousness or something. sorry, i don't remember all the words, but you never see them, and then they showed up online after i used them. i just hang out in usenet, and poke around and skim ER, and that's it on the computer. (or interesting links found in these places).

this isn't even a smidgen of all the weird things that happen to me. something is happening, but i don't know what it is. and i barely care anymore, i'm learning to live with this mystery, i just...miss someone. i hope he doesn't think i'm a bad person. (angelina)

The male DW episodes dissed capitalists on several occasions, so Jodie
is following tradition there!
Post by The True Doctor
On top of that, once again Yasmin fails to alert the police of a serious
incident that would result in a threat to life and well-being, the
spider infestation in the city, so that they can deal with it
professionally.
Even worse, JodieDoc failed to call in UNIT!
But are normal cops trained to cope with giant spiders?
Trash episode!

The circumstances of the plot demanded that the villain had to be
corruptly building something on top of a landfill site in Sheffield.

That means either public-sector development, potentially libelling
Sheffield City Council, or a fictional private-sector property magnate.
Of course the script is going to go with the non-libellous option.

But nowadays, any corrupt real-estate developer is always going to
remind the audience of Donald Trump, and the easiest way to deal with
that is by lampshading it in the dialogue.

Because a good capitalist wouldn't be building on top of a toxic
landfill site in the first lace, so there wouldn't be any giant spiders.

See? There's a nice, simple explanation for everything. No need for
any conspiracy theories about political agendas or anything like that.

Yes, but they're one step removed from the actual project. They were

Rubbish. It's Sheffield councils responsibility to carry out building
and health and safety inspections. It's also their business to, knowing
that he's building on a toxic waste dump to make sure the site has been
decontaminated before allowing building to begin. On top of that it's
also their business to make sure that toxic wast and land fill is not
licensed to dumped underneath any buildings used by the public, and that
those licensed to dump it are doing so in designated sites.

Therefore Sheffield council is either totally corrupt or incompetent.

The circumstances of the plot are totally ridiculous. You don't get
planning approval for building something on top of a landfill site
without out first removing the land fill so that solid foundations can
be laid. You also don't get a license to dump waste without complying
with health and safety conditions, undergoing regular inspections, and
identifying the site to the council, which if they were in their right
mind would not approve one under a building development, especially when
methane could be released from the rotting debris which could cause an
explosion.

That means either public-sector development, potentially libelling
Sheffield City Council, or a fictional private-sector property
magnate. Of course the script is going to go with the non-libellous
option.
Except the BBC has just labeled Sheffield council as being totally
incompetent in allowing this building development to go ahead, allowing
toxic waster to be dumped under it, and without making health and safety
inspections. Either that, or members of this council were being bribed
to turn a blind eye to planning violations.

But nowadays, any corrupt real-estate developer is always going to
remind the audience of Donald Trump, and the easiest way to deal
with that is by lampshading it in the dialogue.
Donald Trump is not a corrupt real-estate developer, and labeling him

Why not portray a good capitalist for once instead of a ridiculous
stereotype devised crazy left wingers?
Because a good capitalist wouldn't be building on top of a toxic
landfill site in the first lace, so there wouldn't be any giant spiders.
A good council would not be allowing any kind of capitalist to build on
top of a toxic landfill site, period.
Post by solar penguin
See? There's a nice, simple explanation for everything. No need
for any conspiracy theories about political agendas or anything like
that.
Given the onesidedness of the portrayal, it is clear that Chibnall is
pursuing a biased one sided left-wing agenda, saying all capitalism is bad.

What should have been done was to show good capitalists doing everything
by the book, and a mafia organization trying to muscle in on their
territory by corrupting public officials in a fictional location.

Of course Trump has been accused of bad, if not corrupt, business
practices over the years. He's gone bankrupt dozens and dozens of times.

What he's not been accused of is anything similar to what we saw in the
episode.

I agree. There's no way the government didn't understand that the site
was a toxic waste dump, in fact, a badly-managed toxic waste dump, and
therefore, couldn't have had a luxury hotel built on top of it.

Yes, the local and national (I assume national authorities regulate
toxic waste dumps) were complicit, if not the recipients of bribes.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a former waste dump. It was a former coal mine.
The waste dumping was being done illicitly by JR’s hazardous waste disposal
subsidiary, taking advantage of large abandoned tunnels, adits and shafts
for a low cost solution.

There was a shorthand here for “what kind of villain is this” that was 100%
Trump. I mean, a somewhat deranged self aggrandising American hotel magnate
with his finger in many corporate pies, and ambitions on the White House
for whatever party will take him? Whose second scene has him pointing at a
hapless junior and barking out “You’re fired!”? The only thing that make
him “not Trump” (c. 2013) are the name and that he claims to hate Trump.

Again - here they made JR complicit in the creation of the toxic waste
dump. And then in trying to make the problem go away (see his first scene).

Trump and corrupt business practices have gone hand in hand for decades.
Who can forget the scam that is Trump University? His pride in being the
ultimate tax-dodger? And of course his first real act as President - to
enact a parcel of tax cuts the principal beneficiaries of which were multi
billionaire property magnates. What are the odds?

That’s not honest capitalism, but it is a capitalist idol (in his own head
at least).

So Chibnall should have dealt with that issue instead off filling the

proven that ghosts do not exist, and not showing how the spiders were

Eh. There was just the one reference. As far as I know, the one thing
Trump's developments haven't been accused of, aside from their fictional
finance and operations, is failure to perform environmental remediation.
There is a development in Chicago that's illegally dumping hot water
back into the Chicago River.

I agree with a lot of your criticism but not all of it. It wasn't a good
episode. What was absurd was the attitude of the three companions, all
from Sheffield under attack by mutant giant spiders, not wanting a
solution that would have killed the spiders dead.

What's with the idiotic solution of locking the spiders into the room to
suffocate to death as a kinder alternative versus exterminating all of
them as quickly as possible?

. . .
What's with the idiotic solution of locking the spiders into the room to
suffocate to death as a kinder alternative versus exterminating all of
them as quickly as possible?
Who went in after them and shut the door to the vault to lock them in?
I'm going with: The door was closed from outside.
By whom?
How did the spiders from the rest of Sheffield reach the vault in time?
How did they hear the music over the far louder background noise on
Yaz's estate?
That one doesn't bear thinking about. The music was the only vibration
in Sheffield the spiders would have responded to, and the pantry in the
panic room was the only food source?

There's no possible wank.

As with all of Chibnall's crap, everything important that happens isn't
even shown. Last time no explanation is give as to what the villain is
fleeing from. Before that everyone is rescued by magic because of a
fortunate coincidence in an episode full of them. And in the first
episode, also full of fortunate coincidences, Whittaker blows the alien
up by magic when the part where she fed it it's own bombs isn't even
shown. Doesn't the misandristic cunt know the expression, 'you make your
own luck'?.
A bit harsh, but I'll agree.

It was only enough to sustain one human for 6 months. How long do you
think it would last 1000 or more giant spiders? Less than a day; that's
assuming the stuff was edible to them to begin with.

How did they hear it over the noise of the city and other music playing?
Why would the Trump villain listen to British grime anyway to have it in
his collection?
Who locked the door after the spiders?
chinball for us.
Oh!! What was Chibnall doing in the show, idiot?? Doing an "Alfred
Hitchcock", maybe??

That one doesn't bear thinking about. The music was the only vibration

The rock music made the spiders THINK that the panic room pantry had
the richest and greatest food supply in the world!
Which is strange, because the vibrations from struggling prey would be
irregular, no music-like rhythm.

But if some spiders weren't fooled and got away, that just leaves plenty
of opportunity for fanfic sequels.

This is where Yads gets confused over the idea of context. He thinks that copying and pasting the entire post he's responding to provides context. And here, of course, he's provided none at all.

Perhaps his comment is relevant, perhaps it's not. Either way it's incredibly hypocritical. He's unable to use Google even when given sufficient context. Then he expects others to randomly find something relevant given almost no context at all.

Here's what I can tell you. Peter Capaldi was briefly in a Scottish punk band. I think he played guitar and sang a bit.

Oh, shut up, Aggie. Capitalism has nothing to do with redevelopment of

It didn't look to me that the Doctor et al had the tools needed to kill hordes of giant spiders, & the Doctor forgot to summon UNIT, so UNIT couldn't bomb the hotel.

And how did they expect all the spiders around all the council estates
in Sheffield to be able to her the music over the background noise and
scuttle off to their deaths? There's probably a hive of them still there.
