So how would you like a Christmas story that deals with a very
christian and very unsettling message?
You know, I've never really worked out what the Christian message is. It
seems to vary from one Christian to another, even within the same
I'm a Christian, A Roman Catholic, more a Practising Roman Catholic,
i.e. I went to Mass this morning!!
The thing that gets me about Christianity is how the story changes!!
When I was a child, attending a Catholic School, we were taught that
there was a Heaven, a Hell and a Purgatory. If you were really good and
died, you went straight to Heaven to be in the presence of God. If you
were bad and died, you went to Hell to be in the presence of The Devil.
If you were somewhere in the middle (like, I think, most people) and
died, you went to Purgatory to think about your sins for some time
before, eventually, going to Heaven! And Babies, who died before being
Baptised so weren't Christians (yet), would go to Purgatory .... even
though they couldn't have done anything wrong!!
Then I learnt that some Christians believe than no-one goes to
Heaven/Hell/Purgatory when they died. Instead, everybody/soul stayed
"in" the ground until the "End of Time", when we will be divided up into
Heaven-Sent or Hell-Bound!
Then I learnt that not every good person gets to go to Heaven, in any
case, because The Bible (Old Testament, I think) states that only
144,000 pious people/souls will make it to Heaven, to be in the presence
of God!! The rest of us Good peoples/souls will get to be resurrected on
to a New, Improved, Perfect, Earth!! ... for Eternity!!
(When I heard this, I was told that there was a man, living in
south-west Victoria, who had already been identified as one of the
So, like I typed, the story keeps changing!!
