Why should they? It's not like the Doctor has looked the same
through all his regenerations. Neither did Romana.

I've just always felt that it was really cool that Ainley looked so much
like Delgado. I thought it would be neat to keep that tradition going.

And I'm not sure I like the idea of a Master who looks like he's in
Coldplay or something.

Hey, welcome back!
I'm late seeing this, but thank you very much. It's been a very
trying month.

Check out posts in rasff with Message IDs
<***@4ax.com> and
<***@4ax.com> for details. The short
of it is that I had a long post-op stay and then had to go back in
about a week later for another week with a very bad post-op infection.

I am outraged only that someone inflicted you and your perpetual

No, I don't think it's rude not to use spoiler space with an incidental
mention of a plot point from an episode from last season of another show.

Delgado will always be the original Master who set the standard for how
he should be played. Ainly was a disappointment, although that was
because of the scripts he was given and not because of his acting
abilities. I agree with you. Give us good talent and a well-acted
role.

What... they couldn't find an actor who looks like Delgado and Ainley?
I'd rather see a great actor like Derek Jacobi play the character instead
of some no talent actor who looks like the previous actors who played the
Master.
I thought it was SO neat having him as the professor! But the twerp he
turned into was a real let-down. That's the Master? No menacing looks
at all. And he does look far too much like the current Doctor.

My usual complaint: I dislike 2-parters. At least this time I don't have
to wait TWO weeks, at least.

I wouldn't give it more than a 4, even though the Captain Jack
immortality bit was intriguing.

| How would Captain Jack survive a nuclear explosion?

Jack's immortality suffers from the same problem as the immortality in
Highlander. Sometimes it's a power of resurrection while at other times
it is the (potentially more useful) ability to remain alive (and even
functional) under conditions that should be lethal. I was hoping they
would have Jack repeatedly disintegrate and resurrect while fiddling with
the power couplings...

Do we know that he didn't get the promised new set of regenerations in
the Five Doctors? Or maybe he eventually used whatever powers he retained
from the Source to possess a Timelord body instead of Nyssa's father. I
try to ignore the movie, but he was into the whole body stealing thing
there as well. :)

Possibly still just two. The tv movie had the Master being executed
look like Delgado, so the regenerated Master there may have been
pre-Ainliey.

Watching the episode knowing the Master was involved, at first I
assumed the creatures shown were related to those in the last real Who
story 'Survival', and we'd find out what the Master had been doing on
that planet all this time :)

This time, energy from the heart of the TARDIS helped the Master regenerate.
Could that be how the Doctor will exceed the 12 regeneration limit in a few
seasons?

The magic is simply in the show getting renewed and the part
recast, with yet another explanation for regeneration.

Although I did have a few problems with this story that keeps me from
giving it a 5.00, over all it was a very good story and a VERY SUPERB
vehicle for the Master's return. Although I would have preferred to
have the regenerated Master look more like he did in the classic series
I am willing to give him a fair chance and see how he does in the new

I'll give it a 5. It was a strong episode, like the last three (Blink, and
The Family 2-parter).

I liked seeing the Master again, although I will have to adjust to the new
younger Master. Right now in the brief glimpse I got of him, his mannerisms
were far to similar to the Doctor. It felt like they could have cast the guy
as The Doctor instead of Tennant and we'd never have known the difference.
I'd have preferred someone who was 5-10 years older, a bit more reserved, and
more menacing. He almost had a playful quality to him.

Having the Master have his own stopwatch was genius, even though I had a
feeling all along the professor was going to turninto the Master (I think I'd
heard a preview that one of the doctor's "old enemies" was going to be back,
and I figured it was going to be the Master)

The bad guys felt like a ripoff of "John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars", with
less gore, but I liked them.

There were none of the cartoonish monsters that I'd been complaining about in
previous seasons. I'm very pleased with the trend here -- The Family, Blink,
and Utopia have all had convincing, and almost frightening, monsters.

Who knew "you are not alone" was going to be a warning, and not a sign of
something good to come.

A good episode all the way around.

Yes. That's exactly it! Too young, too playful, too much like Tennant.
And, I'll add, he doesn't look like Delgado or Ainley.

Why are people so hung up about that? I`d have hated it if they`d gone for
another Delgado-alike, I always thought it was the wrong thing to do with
Ainley. Let a new actor create his own Master, the same as each new actor
creates his own Doctor. Personally I thought Simm was great as The Master,
sure he`s a little more playful but beneath that he`s a far nastier bastard
than any Master we`ve seen previously.

Besides which...did Eric Roberts look anything like Delgado or Ainley?
Certainly didn`t to me.

Actually, I thought that was exactly what made him work. I'm
completely unfamiliar with the classic incarnations of the
character, but as I'm told, he's The Doctor's "player on the
other side", the Hyde to The Doctor's Jekyll, the Moriarty to
The Doctor's Holmes. I thought it was a brilliant bit on John
Simm's part to imitate Tennant's manic performance, so that
he really comes off as The Doctor's evil twin.

(Incidentally, my wife, who is a fan of Classic Who, also
thought he was terrific, and was far less of a comic book
style villain than the classic incarnations were.)

The only problem I had with Simm as The Master is that now
he'll never be able to play The Doctor.
