elevator to determine the floor number. If it's wrong, hop to
another large space and repeat.
A 1000 times?
If the floor number > 507, aim the TARDIS up. If floor number <
507, aim the TARDIS down.
Why do the floor numbers go down as one goes up?
Depends how near you are to the event horizon.
What "Event Horizon", idiot??
The Event Horizon of the Black Hole
A black hole is therefore bounded by a well-defined surface or
edge known as the "event horizon", within which nothing can be
seen and nothing can escape, because the necessary escape
velocity would equal or exceed the speed of light (a physical
impossibility). The event horizon acts like a kind of one-way
membrane, similar to the "point-of-no-return" a boat
experiences when approaching a whirlpool and reaching the point
where it is no longer possible to navigate against the flow.
Or, to look at it in a different way, within the event horizon,
space itself is falling into the black hole at a notional speed
greater than the speed of light.

... but as always, Yad's braindead response has absolutely nothing to
do with the question.
The real reason the "floor numbers go down as one goes up" is simply
because the bridge level, being the most important area, is usually
level 1 (or sometimes 0).
