She was very good in Broadchurch. Very intense. But the brief shot we got
today showed a woman filled with a sense of wonder. A renewal indeed.

It's an easy mistake to make. Johnny Whitaker played Jody on A Family Affair.
Also, he's a boy born in California.

In the meantime, you're addressing someone who lacks the ability to express
any thought coherently, which is harmful to your own brain. The rot will
set in all too soon.

Rot has set in a the BBC with the divisive

Except you wouldn't be saying that if you have seen her on the stage.

See

Sigh... should not be surprising given the politically correct
transgender/gay agenda of the BBC. Oh well, it was a good run.
R.I.P. Doctor Who.
I don't have a problem with a chick Doctor. But it will be bull when
we're inevitably told that we're misogynistic if we don't believe she's
"the best Doctor evah", just because she has a vagina.
Being sexist amd nysoginistic I see.

Chibnall and team could get sacked quite quickly
for this stunt.
It's not a stunt, not a gimmick. This is part of the concept that Chris
Chibnall pitched to the BBC and that they are fully on board with. It's
part of that desire expressed by the BBC that the show should feel like a
completely new show when season 11 debuts.

Curmudgeonly conservatism notwithstanding, if there is any named role on
stage or screen (to be played by a live-action actor who is seen) that is
fully capable of being cast in a colour-blind and gender-blind way, it is
this one.

I've been watching Doctor Who since Hartnell was in the role, and I am
intrigued by this casting and hope it all goes well.

I'm pleased by Chibnall's record on writing TV with coherent plot lines as
well as by his decision to use a writers room team for the show, which
should help to maintain a more consistent "feel" for the show than the last
few years have evidenced.

I can also hope for a move away from the impressionist sf mode so beloved
of Moffat, where he doesn't want you to peek behind the sparkly curtain of
spectacle to see the underlying logic - because there isn't any.

For every lad who stops watching because it's got a girly lead, there may
be another that identifies with the inevitable male companion and wants to
be that companion and adventure with the Doctor.

For every girl who stopped watching because she no longer fancied the
Doctor, which was perhaps part of the audience fall off in the Capaldi era,
there may be another who now will watch because she fancies the companion
and two more who can now identify with the Doctor and will watch because
they can now imagine BEING the Doctor.

The Dads who used to watch the Aggy way and fancy the companion can now
fancy the lead actor instead. The Mums can now also imagine escaping the
drudgery of mundane life in yet another way.

This could be great for the show. Of course, if the stories are crap and
the acting is poor, the haters will blame any failure on the female Doctor.

On the other hand, if people praise the show in spite of such failings,
then THAT would be "political correctness gone mad".

If Jodie sucks as the Doctor, we shouldn't be afraid to say so. But until a
season has aired, to rail against her casting or to complain that this has
killed the show is just reactionary lunacy verging on the psychotic -
indeed, practically Aggy.

Wait and see. The time to pass judgement on the Whittaker era is when
there's a Whittaker era to judge. Not a 5 second shot of a 35 year old
woman cosplaying in season 10 Capaldi gear.

So it's different from the Janeway thing. In any case the first example of

There are loads of examples in tbe 1930s in which the lead actress was
a far bigger star than the lead actor. There are well known supernatural
comedies or light dramas from the 1940s with female leads.

Let's not mingle supernatural with science fiction. Attack of the 50 Foot
Woman must have had a female lead.

key point is, Janeway wasn't any kind of first.

Not at all. This has been my opinion for quite some time, ever since the
hints began that this was the way they were going, with the creation of Missy.

I gotta point out: Doctor Who is very old television. Viewers might
treat it as iconic, but BBC sure as hell doesn't. There have been
significant periods in its history in which BBC treated the program
rather badly.

She's not going to ruin the show. That's already happened any number of
times already. As I said, I'm willing to watch. I hope she can act, and
I hope she gets superior scripts, even though I don't really expect
that will happen.

What I refuse to do is celebrate this as a huge advancement in feminism,
and I'm sticking with my observation that as a practical matter, because
no one is creating enough good new roles for actresses, this is a setback.

There's a movie out this summer with a kick-ass female spy that promos
claim the critics are calling the first female James Bond.

You want to impress me? Create an all new, exciting, entertaining female
character, not a part for a woman that can be compared to a man.

No she wasn't. Of all genres, you'd think they'd be willing to take
chances with casting female leads in science fiction because you're
anticipating a smaller audience anyway and it's not as risky.

I'm pleased by Chibnall's record on writing TV with coherent plot
lines as well as by his decision to use a writers room team for
the show, which should help to maintain a more consistent "feel"
for the show than the last few years have evidenced.
For every girl who stopped watching because she no longer fancied
the Doctor, which was perhaps part of the audience fall off in the
Capaldi era, there may be another who now will watch because she
fancies the companion and two more who can now identify with the
Doctor and will watch because they can now imagine BEING the Doctor.
The Dads who used to watch the Aggy way and fancy the companion can now
fancy the lead actor instead. The Mums can now also imagine escaping the
drudgery of mundane life in yet another way.
This could be great for the show. Of course, if the stories are
crap and the acting is poor, the haters will blame any failure on
the female Doctor.
On the other hand, if people praise the show in spite of such failings,
then THAT would be "political correctness gone mad".
Media: "Doctor Who makes sci-fi history by casting woman in lead role."
Captain Janeway: <face palm>
It's the first time a woman has been cast as essentially the same CHARACTER
as has previously been played by a man.
Right. How is this an advancement for feminism and not the single most
condescending casting decision ever? Women: You're entitled to a
hand-me-down shop-worn lead character only.
You're clutching at straws now, sounds like you're trying to justify
refusing to allow a woman to play one of the most iconic roles on TV by
inventing a way to make it seem like a bad thing.
Post by The Last Doctor
She's an ALIEN SHAPESHIFTER (in a very limited and near-terminal sort of
way), not James Bond.
There's a movie out this summer with a kick-ass female spy that promos
claim the critics are calling the first female James Bond.
You want to impress me? Create an all new, exciting, entertaining female
character, not a part for a woman that can be compared to a man.

Media: "Doctor Who makes sci-fi history by casting woman in lead role."
Captain Janeway: <face palm>
It's the first time a woman has been cast as essentially the same CHARACTER
as has previously been played by a man.
So it's different from the Janeway thing. In any case the first example of
that kind that I can think of is Jamie Sommers. Unless you want to count
comic fantasy, in which case Samantha Stephens.
The doctor is not Dax!

I reject the notion that there's such a thing as gender-blind casting,
and please don't say "gender" when you mean "sex"; "gender" is a
part of speech.

Colorblind casting means something rather different to me, that the
actor's race or ethnicity isn't important to creating the character, or,
if the actor is good enough, the audience can suspend disbelief and
see the character as described, despite the actor not looking at all
like the character.

What colorblind casting does not mean, at least to me, is changing
the character to better resemble the actor, who then gets to play
himself, like changing the character's back story to match the
actor's biography.

All that being said, I'm not going to reject a woman playing the 13th Doctor
because each change of actor is supposed to create a new character. I'll
await being appalled by the scripts.

Lood boos if it is a woman, VERY LOD BOOS!

Who?
Never heard of her.
Wikipedia says St Trinians & Broadchurch, so she's met Tennant and
Chibnall
So, female Dr. Who, so will the side-kick be female (lesbian scenario)
or a man (kept-male scenario?).
Call me when Dr. Who is one of the 73 other genders. Then I'll be upset.

Luke: What?

Obi-Wan: A disturbance in the Force, as if a million nerds just went
